U.S. Reps. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and August Pfluger (R-TX) recently introduced a resolution to mark the one-year anniversary of the attempted assassination of U.S. President Donald Trump in Rep. Kelly’s hometown of Butler, Pa., on July 13, 2024, and to call for Americans to unite against political violence.
“We must stand up together to oppose violence against our nation’s leaders and condemn the hateful, divisive rhetoric that has fueled our nation’s political dialogue in recent years,” said the congressmen in a joint statement released on July 14.
If enacted, House Resolution 571 would condemn those who incite violence against political officials. In addition to the events in Butler, this would include the second attempted assassination of Trump in Florida last year, and attacks on Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Minnesota state lawmakers this year.
The resolution also would honor the life of Corey Comperatore, a volunteer firefighter and U.S. Army veteran who died while shielding his family from the gunfire during the assassination attempt, and Pennsylvanians David Dutch and James Copenhaver, who were critically injured during the shooting, according to the text of the resolution.
“This weekend, as we remember the tragic events in Butler one year ago, may we also take a moment to honor our heroic first responders who selflessly run toward danger to protect our fellow Americans,” said Rep. Kelly and Rep. Pfluger. “May we unite around the common good of these United States. We are stronger together.”
