U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) visited businesses in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday that have a history of providing jobs and social services to help rehabilitate both victims of human trafficking and ex-offenders.
Portman said that he visited Clean Turn, LLC, and She Has A Name after talking to a number of survivors of human trafficking who had found a better future through the companies.
“This impressive group is helping women get their lives back on track and giving them the tools they need to achieve their God-given potential,” Portman said. “I’ve also had the opportunity to learn about the companies from its founder, John Rush. I am proud of the work they have done to help human trafficking victims and to give ex-offenders a second chance.”
As chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, Portman led a yearlong investigation of online sex trafficking that was featured on an ABC Nightline special, “Daughters for Sale.”
Portman also authored five federal anti-trafficking laws – the Bringing Missing Children Home Act, S. 381; the Child Sex Trafficking Data and Response Act, S. 1028; the Combat Human Trafficking Act, S. 140; the End Trafficking in Government Contracting Act, S.2234; and a child sex trafficking amendment to the Violence Against Women Act.
“I will continue my efforts in Congress to help end human trafficking and ensure that ex-offenders are given the opportunity to succeed and lead productive lives,” Portman said.
