Estes introduces resolution honoring American cowboys, historic cattle trails

U.S. Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS) introduced a House resolution on April 2 celebrating the contributions of the American cowboy and the historic cattle trails that helped shape the nation’s economy and identity in the decades following the Civil War.

H.Res.1152 highlights the Chisholm, Shawnee, Western, and Goodnight-Loving trails as economic lifelines that drove millions of Texas longhorns to northern markets and established the foundation of the modern American beef industry.

The bipartisan resolution was cosponsored by six lawmakers, including U.S. Reps. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) and Stephanie Bice (R-OK).

“The American cowboy is more than just a figure of our past; it is a global symbol of the courage, determination, and independence that define the American spirit,” Estes said. “From the Chisholm Trail to the Great Western Trail, these routes through Kansas and the heartland didn’t just move cattle, they rebuilt the American economy and fed a growing nation.”

The resolution arrives as the country counts down to its 250th anniversary on July 4. “As we celebrate our 250th year, it is only fitting that we honor the group of individuals who shaped our frontier and our national identity,” Rep. Estes said.

The resolution has drawn support from agricultural and heritage organizations across the country, including the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the Kansas Livestock Association, the Texas and International Chisholm Trail Associations, the Historic Cattle Trails Coalition, and cattlemen’s associations from Colorado, Nebraska, North Dakota, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.

“This resolution recognizes not only the enduring impact of those early cattle drives, but also the generations of cattlemen and cattlewomen who have built upon that foundation to sustain a vital industry and way of life. We appreciate Rep. Estes’ leadership on this important recognition,” said Kansas Livestock Association Chief Executive Officer Matt Teagarden.
