Cassidy’s priorities included in Senate-approved housing package

A bipartisan legislative package aimed at increasing affordable housing supply and reducing construction costs that includes several priorities championed by U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) passed the U.S. Senate on March 12.

The 21st Century Renewing Opportunity in the American Dream (ROAD) to Housing Act, H.R. 6644, passed the Senate with a vote of 89-10. The U.S. House of Representatives approved the measure on Feb. 9 with a 390-9 vote. The Senate-approved bill now heads back to the House and includes Sen. Cassidy’s priorities to make housing affordable, support United States military veterans, and boost disaster recovery.

“Families are working hard, doing everything right, and still can’t afford a home,” Sen. Cassidy said. “The wins I helped secure in this bill help make that dream of homeownership achievable.”

The provisions Sen. Cassidy helped secure in H.R. 6644 include language from the Reforming Disaster Recovery Act to strengthen federal disaster recovery grants, improve federal coordination, and establish a dedicated office to ensure communities can rebuild faster and stronger. The senator first introduced the bill during the 117th Congress.

Also included in the approved package is the bipartisan Housing Unhoused Disabled Veterans Act, S. 1415, which Sen. Cassidy cosponsored in April 2025 alongside bill sponsor U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA).

The legislation would ensure disabled veterans’ benefits don’t count against them when applying for housing assistance, among other provisions to support related housing needs, according to a bill summary provided by Sen. Cassidy’s staff.

Lastly, the package includes language from Sen. Cassidy’s Community Investment and Prosperity Act, S. 2464, which he cosponsored with U.S. Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) in July 2025 to unlock additional private capital for affordable housing and community development in rural communities, the summary says.
