Ayotte, Fischer introduce bipartisan bill to help develop, focus Internet strategy

U.S. Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Brian Schatz (D-HI) introduced legislation on Tuesday to bring a national Internet strategy into focus concerning future technology, known as the “Internet of Things” (IoT).

The Developing Innovation and Growing the Internet of Things (DIGIT) Act would require the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to report on spectrum requirements and would convene a working group to assess the impact of connected technology.

“Innovation is the backbone of the American economy, and we must continue to work towards smart policies that foster creative solutions for people and businesses,” Ayotte said. “Policymakers have an important role in studying the opportunities IoT presents, and I’m honored to work alongside Sens. Fischer, Booker and Schatz on a bipartisan basis to encourage our talented innovators and job creators. Whether it’s fitness wearables or cloud infrastructure, harnessing the full potential of connected data flow from IoT devices will serve to create newfound efficiencies for consumers, entrepreneurs, and businesses of all sizes.”

Under the bill, a working group of private and federal stakeholders would provide recommendations to help Congress foster, encourage and support the growth of connected Internet capabilities.

Ayotte, Fischer, Booker and Schatz have partnered over the last two years to explore advancements in connected technologies and related policy matters. The House of Representatives approved a resolution authored by the group last year that supports developing a strategy to maintain U.S. competitiveness and digital innovation.

“I’m proud to continue my work with Sens. Booker, Ayotte and Schatz on the Internet of Things,” Fischer said. “Together, we are working with America’s innovators to improve outdated regulations and update our laws so that this growth can continue aiding our growing economy.”

Booker said the Internet of Things has already had a “major impact” on the economy, society and individual wellbeing.

“This bill underscores our strong commitment to fostering innovation, protecting consumers and finding collaborative solutions to outstanding challenges,” Booker said. “I am grateful to have worked with Sens. Fischer, Schatz and Ayotte on this legislation and look forward to continuing our focus on the Internet of Things and ensuring America leads the world in cutting-edge technologies.”
