Portman expresses optimism about GOP candidates

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) said he thinks the Republicans have a strong shot at winning control of the U.S. Senate this November during a breakfast meeting of The Ripon Society on Tuesday.

Regarding the GOP candidates, he called them “the best slate of candidates that I have seen in modern times.”

Portman attributes the lineup of candidates to a different approach by the GOP.

“We have done it differently this year,” he said. “I spent the first few months recruiting, and that has paid off. We have great candidates around the country. And at the end of the day, I think you will see that the quality of candidates make the difference.”

Through his position as vice chairman of Finance for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Portman says he is making sure candidates have access to needed resources.

One of the ideas Portman has shared with candidates across the country is his “Jobs for America” plan introduced earlier this year. The comprehensive plan outlines seven objectives, such as adopting healthcare solutions to lower costs and increase choices, reducing Washington regulations to unshackle job creators, and increasing exports to help workers and farmers sell more products and create more jobs.
