Rep. Noem receives first ‘Friend of the Prairie’ award

Congresswoman Kristi Noem, R-South Dakota, was named a “Friend of the Prairie” for her conservation efforts and appointment to the 2014 Farm Bill Conference Committee.

Noem’s designation is the first of its kind given by the South Dakota Grassland Coalition.

Jim Faulstich, chairman of the SDGC, explained why Noem was given the award, pointing out that she uniquely understands the needs and everyday lives of those who work the land.

“As a farmer, rancher and hunter, Congresswoman Noem understands the importance of improving stewardship of our natural resources through sustainable and profitable management,” Faulstich said. “She is truly a friend to our grasslands and South Dakota’s prairie.”

Noem was excited to be recognized by her peers and constituents.

“Farmers, ranchers and hunters have long been the pillar of conservation in America, and I am proud to carry on that tradition,” Noem said. “It is an honor to be named as a ‘Friend of the Prairie’ and I look forward to continuing this important work so future generations can enjoy native sod and grasslands as we do today.”

Noem represents South Dakota’s at-large congressional district and was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010.
