Widows, widowers would receive faster survivor benefits under new Estes bill

U.S. Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS) on June 28 sponsored legislation that would extend the retroactivity of applications for survivor’s insurance benefits.

“When facing the devastating loss of a loved one, the first thing on a spouse’s mind shouldn’t be to call the Social Security Administration,” said Rep. Estes. “Widows and widowers should be able to claim survivor benefits from the date their loved one passed away, regardless of when they can file a claim.”

Specifically, H.R. 4197 would remove Social Security red tape for those who lose a loved one by permitting widows and widowers to claim survivor benefits from the date of their loved one’s passing, rather than being eligible from the date that they apply, according to a bill summary provided by Rep. Estes’ staff.

H.R. 4197 has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee.
