Sen. Roger Wicker
U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) recently joined several efforts initiated in the U.S. Senate to mitigate the rise of persecution against Christians in the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
“The United States has led the world in religious freedom, standing against tyrannical regimes like the People’s Republic of China,” Sen. Wicker said. “We must speak the truth about the regime’s evil crackdown on Christians and other religious groups. We will not stop advocating for those living under the thumb of Xi Jinping’s oppression.”
Sen. Wicker, along with U.S. Sens. Ted Budd (R-NC) and James Lankford (R-OK), sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to urge the State Department to impose sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights and Accountability Act on PRC officials responsible for religious freedom violations in China.
The Global Magnitsky Human Rights and Accountability Act, co-authored by Sen. Wicker, was enacted into law in 2016. It grants the U.S. government the ability to sanction individuals for human rights abuse.
“Given American leadership on the world stage, the United States has and continues to serve a crucial role in promoting religious freedom around the world through the Department of State and the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom,” the letter stated.
Wicker also joined U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in a resolution condemning China’s persecution of minority groups, including Christians.
