Upton report highlights 2015 successes, looks to the future

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) recently released his “2015: The Year in Review and a Look Ahead” report, outlining legislative priorities from 2015 and looking ahead to 2016.

“We had a busy year working to move the ball down the field by focusing on commonsense, bipartisan solutions to problems faced by families and businesses here in Southwest Michigan and across the country,” Upton, who also chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said. “I’m proud of the progress we’ve made on a host of fronts, and look forward to the new year as we still have much work yet to be done as we pursue an ambitious, pro-growth agenda. I’m excited and optimistic about the opportunities before us as we continue to get the job done for everyone in Southwest Michigan.”

Upton said that jobs and the economy are his number one priority.

“Southwest Michigan is a hub for commerce and innovation, and when our residents are empower to succeed, we all thrive,” Upton said. “2016 will be a time of even more innovation and change. We all should be doing everything we can to ensure Southwest Michigan stay at the forefront of the 21st century global economy.”

To aid in that goal, Upton joined House colleagues in advancing the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 and voted to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank.

Upton also highlighted efforts to protect the United States.

“In the current climate of international terrorism, no mistakes can be made and America’s top foreign policy goal must be to defend our citizens and our homeland from terrorist threats,” Upton said. “Combating terrorism and preventing future attacks remain national priorities. I have always voted to ensure the brave men and women of our Armed Forces have the resource and training necessary to succeed on and off the battlefield. In 2016, we should focus on finding common ground for keeping our homeland safe.”
