The U.S. House of Representatives on July 22 passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2027, H.R. 8800, which includes several priorities championed by U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA).
“The passage of the National Defense Authorization Act is an important step in keeping America safe and supporting our military,” Rep. Calvert said. “The NDAA includes an important investment in our troops by giving them a well-deserved pay raise and resources to improve housing, education, and access to childcare for military families.”
H.R. 8800 also builds upon the work the congressman has done as chairman of the U.S. House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee by authorizing key defense programs that are driving innovation and rapidly delivering new capabilities to America’s warfighters, he said.
“At my request, the bill [also] includes report language about the pending closure of the state prison adjacent to Naval Surface Warfare Center–Corona and requires a briefing from Navy leadership about potential encroachment issues with possible incompatible development,” added the congressman. “I’m committed to working with the city of Norco and the Navy to ensure a compatible use of that property is put in place.”
Rep. Calvert also pointed out that the FY 2027 NDAA includes his provision for a pilot program “to help transitioning service members move into high-need K–12 classrooms and to recruit degree-holding military spouses and prepare them for fully certified special education teaching positions.”
The House voted 216-212 to approve the FY 2027 NDAA, which would establish national security policies and spending authorizations, advancing it to the U.S. Senate for action.
