The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) would expand its precision oncology program for prostate cancer under a bill sponsored on July 15 by U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS), chairman of the U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
“There must be adequate research, resources, and outreach available to veterans battling cancer,” Sen. Moran said. “This bill will make certain that veterans with prostate cancer in rural America receive the same cutting-edge therapies as a veteran living next to a major urban research hospital and have all the support they need, and deserve, to recover.”
The senator introduced the Precision Oncology Program for Cancer of the Prostate (POPCaP) Authorization Act of 2026, S. 4993, to permanently authorize and expand the VA POPCaP.
If enacted, S. 4993 would create seven additional centers of excellence at VA medical centers to focus on prostate cancer care and establish a performance review process to maintain accountability and high performance, according to a bill summary provided by Sen. Moran’s office.
Currently, there are 21 POPCaP/Genitourinary Centers of Excellence within the VA that provide advanced prostate cancer care, genetic testing, and clinical trials.
ZERO Prostate Cancer, the American Urological Association Public Policy Council, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation have endorsed S. 4993, which has been referred for consideration to the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
