Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar
U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) said on Sept. 4 that she plans to introduce a concurrent resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives that would condemn socialism as both a failed ideology and as the antithesis of the American Dream.
“History is clear: from Stalin’s gulags and Cambodia’s killing fields to Castro’s firing squads in Havana, socialism has always ended in misery, suffering, and death,” the congresswoman said. “That is why I am proud to introduce this concurrent resolution denouncing the horrors of socialism … to ensure Congress speaks with one voice in condemning socialism in all its forms, wherever it rears its ugly head.”
“America must always stand as the light of liberty against the darkness of socialism and its false promises of equality,” she added.
Rep. Salazar’s resolution will be the companion proposal to Senate Concurrent Resolution 21, introduced on Sept. 3 by U.S. Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL).
According to the text of the resolution, socialist ideology necessitates a concentration of power that has, time and time again, collapsed into communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships, and has repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of more than 100 million people worldwide, among other atrocities.
The resolution, if enacted, would resolve that Congress denounces socialism in all its forms, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States, the text says.
