Moran sponsors bipartisan bill to expand access to VA lodging facilities

A bipartisan bill sponsored on Nov. 6 by U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) would provide members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families with temporary lodging at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Fisher Houses when they travel significant distances to receive medical care.

The Fisher House Availability Act of 2025, S. 3119, which is cosponsored by U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), would expand eligibility for temporary lodging at these VA facilities to include active-duty service members and reserve members.

“We have a commitment to support and care for our veterans, service members and their families, especially when they are in a time of need,” Sen. Moran said. “Military service is a family service, and this expansion makes certain military and veteran families can stay close to their loved ones while they are receiving medical care.”

“I am grateful to the Fisher House Foundation for their commitment to provide comfort and lodging to those who have served and sacrificed for our nation, and I look forward to this legislation’s passage,” he added.

The Fisher House Foundation, which recently dedicated its 100th home, has provided more than 12.5 million nights of lodging for United States military veterans, service members, and their families.

If enacted, S. 3119 would direct the VA Secretary to make the temporary lodging facilities available for members of the Armed Forces, other individuals on active duty, and family members of such individuals on a space-available basis, according to the text of the bill.

“I’m proud to partner with [Sen.] Moran to introduce this common-sense legislation that will ensure service members and their families can utilize and stay at VA Fisher Houses,” said Sen. Blumenthal. “The Fisher House Foundation does great work serving veterans and their loved ones, and their commitment to helping our nation’s past and present servicemembers is truly commendable.”

S. 3119 has been referred for consideration to the U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, which Sen. Moran chairs and Sen. Blumenthal serves as ranking member.
