Toward improving the mobility, mental health, and overall quality of life for United States military veterans and others diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and similar movement disorders, U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL) on June 4 introduced the bipartisan Boxing Therapy for Parkinson’s Access Act.
“I was fortunate to recently visit a Rock Steady Boxing class at K-Fit Minooka to listen to members’ personal stories and see firsthand how this program helps individuals manage Parkinson’s symptoms,” Rep. LaHood said. “Boxing therapy significantly improves mobility and helps those with Parkinson’s remain more independent in their daily lives.”
The congressman sponsored H.R. 9150 alongside lead original cosponsor U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski (D-IL) to direct the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs to provide coverage for boxing-based exercise classes for veterans and others diagnosed with certain movement disorders.
“I am grateful to Congresswoman Budzinski for joining me to introduce the Boxing Therapy for Parkinson’s Access Act to ensure that all veterans have access to this therapy to slow the progress of Parkinson’s and reclaim their lives from this disease,” said Rep. LaHood. “We owe veterans that and much more.”
Senior Services Plus, the American Parkinson Disease Association, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, and the Parkinson’s Foundation endorsed the measure, which has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
“Our veterans sacrificed so much for our country, and we owe it to them to make sure they get the care and support they need following their service,” Rep. Budzinski said. “I’m proud to help lead this bill, that will help more veterans access these services freely without having to worry about the financial burden.”
