Kim introduces resolution condemning China’s ongoing human rights abuses

U.S. Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) on June 1 signed on as the lead original cosponsor of a bipartisan resolution marking the 34th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre and condemning the ongoing human rights abuses by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“We will never forget the brave students who stood up to their oppressive regime and came face-to-face with the People’s Liberation Army in Tiananmen Square,” Rep. Kim said. “More than three decades later, we remember the victims and honor their legacy by supporting freedom-loving people who remain trapped under the Chinese Communist Party’s authoritarianism.”

Specifically, House Resolution (H.Res.) 462, which is sponsored by U.S. Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA), would call on the United States government and members of Congress to mark the 34th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests, including through meetings with participants of the Tiananmen Square protests who live outside of China and the families and friends of the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre based outside China, according to the text of the resolution.

H.Res. 462 also would support ongoing peaceful movements for human rights in China and of the people in Hong Kong, Tibet, and Xinjiang, the bill says.

“I am proud to stand together with Ranking Member Bera to lead this bipartisan resolution and send a united message that the United States will continue to be a beacon of freedom, hope, and opportunity on the world stage,” said Rep. Kim, chair of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Indo-Pacific Subcommittee.

Among the 11 other lawmakers joining Rep. Kim as a cosponsor of H.Res. 462 was U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner. The resolution has been referred to the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee for consideration.

“We cannot turn a blind eye to the CCP’s intensifying assault on freedom, democracy, and human rights,” Rep. Bera said. “This bipartisan resolution sends a clear message that on this solemn anniversary the United States Congress stands in support of fundamental human rights and freedoms for the people of China and Hong Kong.”
