Kelly, Fitzpatrick unveil resolution recognizing Community Is Stronger Than Cancer Day

U.S. Reps. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) introduced a bipartisan resolution recognizing June 28 as Community Is Stronger Than Cancer Day, honoring communities that support cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and their families.

House Resolution 1397 was introduced alongside U.S. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) and Debbie Dingell (D-MI). All four lawmakers are co-chairs of the House Cancer Caucus.

“This resolution stands with the more than 18 million Americans who are living with cancer. In Congress, we must continue working to fund cancer research and to promote legislation that brings new cancer treatments to market,” Rep. Kelly said. “As a Co-Chair of the House Cancer Caucus and also of the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus, I’ve had the honor to meet some of the strongest, most courageous Americans who have battled cancer.”

The 18.6 million Americans with a history of cancer represents nearly one in 18 citizens, according to the resolution. An estimated 2.1 million individuals may be diagnosed with cancer in 2026.

The June 28 date coincides with the birthday of Gilda Radner, the Saturday Night Live performer who died of ovarian cancer. The observance was first celebrated in 2021.

“When more than 18 million Americans are living with a history of cancer, and millions more step forward as caregivers, it’s clear community is not just part of the fight—it is the fight,” Rep. Fitzpatrick said. “This resolution marks an enduring commitment to the idea that compassion and connection will always be stronger than cancer, and that no one should ever face this journey alone.”

A 2025 report from the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP estimated that out of 63 million caregivers in the United States, approximately 4.4 million are caring for someone diagnosed with cancer.

“No one should ever have to fight cancer alone,” Rep. Wasserman Schultz said. “As a breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand the importance of having a strong community and support system during this battle.”
