Heller highlights Nevada’s pro-business environment during Google event

The State of Nevada is open for business and stands ready to continue growing the economy, said U.S. Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV) on Aug. 6 during the Grow with Google event held at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno.

“As one of the fastest growing economies per capita, Nevada’s success is not an accident,” Sen. Heller said during the free, one-day training event for small businesses, students, educators, job seekers, and entrepreneurs.

“Our state has created an environment that is friendly to businesses. We have diversified the industries coming into Nevada, and we have provided opportunities for companies to quickly establish facilities and start hiring,” he said.

Grow with Google organizers held up Moment Skis, a Reno-based ski manufacturer, as an example of how to utilize Google to increase online sales. The owners of Moment Skis attribute more than 75 percent of business to the company’s website.

Sen. Heller also highlighted the company’s success, which has included making skis for U.S. Olympians David Wise, Shannon Bahrke, and Heather McPhie.

“Moment skis is an incredible example of the kind of small businesses that have the opportunity to succeed in our state,” the senator said during the Google event. “Just look around in this community to see the success of local businesses and Reno’s growth.”

Sen. Heller also pointed to the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRIC) as another “great example” of boosting economic growth. “In fact, our host here today – Google – has a location at TRIC,” he said.

Nevadans had the opportunity during Google’s day-long event to attend five workshops, one-on-one coaching opportunities, and hands-on demonstrations to improve their digital skills in areas such as online marketing, job search strategies, and search engine optimization.

Sen. Heller thanked Google for hosting the Reno event. “I believe that there’s no better place for it than Nevada – a state that went from having one of the worst unemployment rates during the recession to now being one of the fastest growing states in the nation,” he said.

The senator added that his home state continues to lead the United States in economic growth and in July “drew in three new companies that are expected to provide good-paying jobs,” including Bently Heritage in Minden, Nev., which plans a distillery expansion that will include the use of locally grown grains and botanicals.

Another company, Cyanco in Winnemucca, Nev., plans to pay employees a whopping $44-an-hour wage, while Figure Technologies is considering a downtown Reno location where it would hire 65 employees for an average $30-an-hour wage, according to a statement from the senator’s office.
