The U.S. Treasury would be directed to mint commemorative coins honoring the service and sacrifice of America’s firefighters under a bipartisan bill sponsored on March 21 by U.S. Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY).
“Firefighters put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities, and far too many have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” said Rep. Garbarino. “I’m proud to lead this effort to honor our fallen heroes.”
The coins minted and issued under an enacted National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Coin Act, H.R. 2257, which has four original cosponsors, including U.S. Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Brittany Pettersen (D-CO), would be emblematic of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
The coins would be issued in 2026, and proceeds from their sale would support the mission and programs of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, according to a bill summary provided by Rep. Garbarino’s staff.
“The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Coin will serve as a lasting tribute to their courage and commitment, while also raising critical funds to support survivor families and memorial programs through the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation,” the congressman said.
Specifically, the bill would require that the U.S. Mint produces limited-edition $5 gold, $1 silver, and half-dollar clad coins, the summary says.
“In Colorado and across the country, firefighters run headfirst into danger to rescue people, protect our homes, and safeguard our lands,” said Rep. Pettersen. “This legislation is about making sure we always honor those who gave everything in the line of duty. I’m proud to introduce this bill with Congressman Andrew Garbarino and hope these memorial coins will serve as a small token of our appreciation for the courage and dedication of Colorado’s brave firefighters.”
H.R. 2257 has been referred to the U.S. House Financial Services Committee for consideration.
