St. Patrick’s Day would be designated as a federal holiday under legislation proposed on March 14 by U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), who also would like to establish a National Museum of Irish American History.
“As the proud descendant of Irish immigrants and a steadfast friend of Ireland, I am honored to introduce this bipartisan legislation to ensure that St. Patrick’s Day is recognized as a federal holiday — a day to honor the extraordinary contributions of the Irish to the American story,” said Rep. Fitzpatrick.
The St. Patrick’s Day Act, H.R. 2119, would recognize the contributions of Irish Americans and the enduring bond that exists between the United States and Ireland, according to a bill summary provided by his staff.
“St. Patrick’s Day is more than just a date on the calendar — it is a tribute to the perseverance, sacrifice, and indomitable spirit of the Irish people,” Rep. Fitzpatrick said. “The Irish came to America seeking opportunity, and in turn, they helped build, defend, and enrich our great nation in ways too great to measure.
“Their story is one of hardship and hope, struggle and triumph — woven into the very fabric of our country,” added the congressman. “Today, with nearly two million Irish Americans in Pennsylvania and millions more across the nation, that legacy endures.”
Also on March 14, Rep. Fitzpatrick sponsored the bipartisan H.R. 2121, a bill that would establish a commission to study the potential creation of a National Museum of Irish American History.
“This museum will stand as a testament to [their] legacy — not just to honor the past, but to inspire the future,” said Rep. Fitzpatrick on March 12. “It will ensure that generations to come understand that the Irish spirit — undaunted, unbreakable, and unrelenting — has not only endured in America but has helped define it.”
H.R. 2121 has 14 original cosponsors, including U.S. Reps. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Richard Neal (D-MA), who along with Rep. Fitzpatrick are members of the Friends of Ireland Caucus.
The proposed commission would conduct a comprehensive study to assess potential locations, governance structures, sustainable funding sources, and curatorial strategies for the museum.
A critical aspect of this review, according to the lawmakers, would be exploring an affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution to enhance the museum’s reach, historical authenticity, and educational impact.
“This museum will allow millions of Americans to learn about Irish-American culture and honor those who have made an impact on the United States,” said Rep. Kelly. “This commission will take the next step forward to bringing this museum to life and ensuring Irish-American history will be carried on for generations to come.”
