Dent outlines congressional cancer prevention efforts

U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) recently outlined congressional efforts to fund cancer research during a National Cancer Prevention Day event held at the U.S. Capitol.

Dent, the co-chairman of the House Cancer Caucus and the Skin Cancer Caucus, delivered his remarks at an event organized by Less Cancer, a non-profit group dedicated to raising awareness about the benefits of cancer risk reduction and prevention efforts.

“It’s been an encouraging sign to see how much shared support there is here in Congress across both sides of the aisle for cancer prevention, treatment and research programs,” Dent said. “I’ve been astounded by how many of us have personal accounts to share about cancer affecting family, friends and loved ones who are closest to us.”

Dent outlined congressional efforts he’s spearheaded to support funding for cancer research and prevention programs.

“Last year’s appropriations bill provided a $2 billion increase for the National Institutes of Health, and as we prepare for fiscal year 2017, I will once again work to ensure that this critical funding is provided for efforts that can make a true difference going forward,” Dent said.

Dent said he was honored to serve as the National Cancer Prevention Day event’s Elsie Hillman Speaker. The late Elsie Hillman and her husband, Henry, have been longtime supporters of cancer research and prevention programs.

“Elsie dedicated so much of her life to improving the lives of others and enhancing health care initiatives and research,” Dent said.

Dent added that he was “inspired” by recent progress made in reaching the ultimate goal of preventing cancer once and for all.
