Cassidy’s bill authorizes grants for natural gas distribution pipeline updates

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) is cosponsoring a bipartisan bill that would authorize the U.S. Secretary of Transportation to provide grants for natural gas distribution pipeline infrastructure safety and modernization.

“America and the world run on Louisiana natural gas,” Sen. Cassidy said on Sept. 12. “We strengthen our country by strengthening our pipeline system.”

The lawmaker on Sept. 4 introduced the American Energy Security Act of 2025, S. 2713, alongside bill sponsor U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA). The measure is under consideration by the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.

If enacted, S. 2713 would reauthorize the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s Natural Gas Distribution Infrastructure Safety and Modernization (NGDISM) Grant Program, which provides federal funding to help communities replace aging, leak-prone natural gas pipelines, improving safety, reliability, and reducing methane emissions.

Since the program started, Louisiana has received $95 million in funding for pipeline infrastructure safety and modernization, according to information provided by Sen. Cassidy’s staff.
