Barr applauds EPA’s approval of Kentucky’s request to opt out of RFG program

U.S. Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY) credited the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Trump administration for formally approving Kentucky’s petition to opt out from the reformulated gasoline (RFG) program for the Louisville area.

“I applaud President Trump and EPA Administrator Zeldin for approving Louisville’s withdrawal from the reformulated gas program,” Rep. Barr said. “This is a major win for Kentucky families and small businesses who have been burdened by higher fuel costs for too long.”

In a notice published in the March 2 Federal Register, the EPA determined that the removal of the RFG program for the Kentucky portion of the Louisville area is consistent with the applicable provisions of the Clean Air Act and EPA regulations.

The removal of the RFG mandate for Jefferson, Bullitt, and Oldham counties — which was originally aimed at reducing air pollution but added 20 cents to 25 cents per gallon to fuel costs — will officially take effect on May 27, according to the EPA.

“I advocated directly with Administrator Zeldin for this common-sense change, and I’m grateful the Trump administration came through in a big way once again for Kentucky,” said Rep. Barr. “Lower costs, fewer mandates, and more freedom for our local economy — that’s how we keep Kentucky competitive.”
