After Thursday’s announcement by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Head Start that it will grant Blue Water Community Action (BWCA) of Port Huron, Michigan, $3.13 million over five years to continue Head Start and Early Head Start Programs, U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI) released a statement applauding the action.
“Early childhood education and development are critical to a child’s future and ability to succeed, especially those children who may require specialized education services,” Miller said. “Early intervention programs, like Head Start and Early Head Start, help ensure each child reaches his or her full potential, which is why I applaud the HHS Office of Head Start’s decision to grant Blue Water Community Action the funds they need to continue providing their services through 2020.”
Melinda Johnson, executive director of Head Start, talked about the effectiveness of the grant program and the reasons for selecting Blue Water.
“We’re so pleased to be able to continue offering high-quality services and programming to the most vulnerable population in our community,” Johnson said. “(It is also important to) be able to partner with St. Clair County RESA to provide full-day services to 4-year-olds in the Greater Port Huron and Downriver areas using Great Start Readiness Program funds as a match to the federal funding.”
Miller has represented Michigan’s 10th District in the House since 2003. Born in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan, in 1954, Miller previously served as Michigan’s 40th secretary of state from 1995 to 2003. Miller was educated at Macomb Community College & Northwood Institute and serves on the following committees: Homeland Security, Transportation and Infrastructure and Committee on Administration .
