U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) recently met with DePue, Illinois Mayor Eric Bryant, along with other local elected officials, to discuss the ongoing Superfund site clean-up in the city.
The DePue/New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Superfund Site consists of approximately 950 acres. It primarily consists of a zinc smelting facility, but over the years also included a diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer plant and sulfuric acid plants. The plants were demolished in 1991.
Since taking office, Kinzinger has made it clear that the DePue cleanup is a high priority to his office, making sure that his staff regularly attends the Community Advisory Group meetings.
The Congressman has been working as a liaison during discussions between federal and state agencies, in order to expedite progress on the cleanup of the site.
During the most recent meeting, Kinzinger shared an update from his meeting with Lisa Bonnett, director of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), the lead oversight agency for the site investigation and cleanup.
“I appreciate Mayor Bryant’s work on this important issue facing the Village of DePue,” Kinzinger said. “This clean-up project has been a long time coming, and I was glad to share with Mayor Bryant that based on my meeting with Director Bonnett of the IEPA, I am optimistic we will continue to see progress made. I commend Director Bonnett for her commitment to the project and to the people of DePue.”
