Walorski, officials celebrate first Mercedes R-Class car built at Indiana plant

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN) joined with executives from auto companies Mercedes-Benz and AM General at a special event celebrating the first Mercedes-Benz R Class automobile to roll off the line at AM General’s new state-of-the-art vehicle assembly plant Tuesday in Mishawaka, Indiana.

“I want to congratulate both AM General and Mercedes-Benz on the rollout of the R-Class vehicle at this extraordinary assembly plant,” Walorski during the event. “As I hear the sounds from the vehicle production line, I know that means innovation and good-paying jobs for Hoosiers.”

Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz hired AM General to produce its R-Class luxury vehicle line at the manufacturer’s world-class 675,000-square-foot Commercial Assembly Plant, which is expected to soon create more than 200 new jobs.

AM General’s Commercial Assembly Plant is a full-service facility that manufactures and supports vehicle-assembly projects, utilizing high-tech robotic welding, painting and assembly techniques coupled with a lean manufacturing culture and a highly skilled work force to meet customers’ needs.

“This partnership is not only important to our community, but also to AM General’s expanding global presence,” Walorski said. “Now, skilled workers from Michiana (Michigan) will help produce and deliver exceptional vehicles for use around the world.”

Walorski is a lifelong Hoosier, born and raised in South Bend, who has dedicated her career to helping Hoosier families. She is grateful to serve the people of Indiana’s Second District in the 114th Congress, where she serves on the House Armed Services, Veterans’ Affairs and Agriculture Committees, and serves as chairwoman of the Nutrition Subcommittee under the Agriculture Committee.
