Congresswoman applauds House passage of defense funding bill

After her vote on Thursday supporting the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2016, which included a pay raise for U.S. soldiers, U.S. Rep. Mimi Walters (R-CA) released a statement regarding her vote and the importance of funding the U.S. military.

The House passed the bill 278-149.

“As the daughter of a U.S. Marine, I understand the sacrifice that our troops make to serve and defend this great nation,” Walters, a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and Judiciary Committee, said. “For this reason, I was pleased to support (the) bill, which would give our troops a well-deserved 2.3 percent pay raise – 1 percent higher than the president’s request. H.R. 2685 would also enhance our national security by equipping and preparing our military force with the tools and resources they need to keep our country safe.”

The legislation also allocates $578.6 billion in discretionary spending for numerous military operations abroad, as well as vital national security needs and much-improved health and quality-of-life programs for the military men and women who serve the nation.

“In a time of rising global threats, ranging from ISIS to Russia, we need to ensure that we maintain global readiness and that our military remains the best in the world,” Walters said. “This bill does precisely that. I hope my colleagues in the Senate will work quickly to pass this vital legislation.”
