Congresswoman praises job-training grant tied to Michigan firm’s expansion

Earlier this week, U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI) praised a $2 million grant that the Michigan Strategic Fund approved for local job training tied to the expansion of SMR Automotive Systems USA, Inc., based in Marysville, St. Clair County.

“Expected to create 200 new jobs, the welcome expansion of SMR Automotive Systems will be a major economic boon for Marysville and its residents,” Miller said. “This grant, along with the tax incentives provided by the city of Marysville, is truly an investment in Michigan’s continued re-emergence and underscores the importance of supporting innovative manufacturing critical to our economic success.”

SMR, a Tier 1 automtiove supplier that produces rear vision systems, has outgrown its current location. Company officials have announced plans to acquire more space adjacent to the current plant — an investment of more than $18 million.

SMR competed for the grant with companies in South Carolina, Alabama and Missouri.

Further funding for the expansion will come from Community Development Block Grants, as well as a 12-year, $1.9 million property tax abatement approved by the City of Marysville.
