U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany Jr. (R-LA) said Wednesday he applauds a White House announcement that indicated President Obama would be open to establishing an agreement that would mandate a congressional review and acceptance of a proposed nuclear deal with Iran.
“It is imperative Congress has its say on a deal with far-reaching and historic implications like the current negotiations with Iran,” Boustany said. “The administration’s eagerness to cut a deal has cast serious doubt on whether we have pursued all possible avenues, using every available tool in our toolbox to get the best possible deal.”
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously approved legislation Wednesday that will authorize congressional review of this deal.
“Protecting the safety of American families is my most solemn duty as your elected representative,” Boustany said. “I won’t support a deal that doesn’t go far enough to protect American lives and interests, and I won’t support a deal that doesn’t do enough to protect our friend and ally, Israel.”
A vote to lift economic sanctions in exchange for Iranian nuclear concessions is to be discussed a later date, if and when mediation occurs between the Obama administration, Iran and five other nations.
