The House passed Rep. Tom Reed’s (R-NY) Fighting Hunger Incentive Act on Friday, legislation that gives incentives to businesses that contribute excess inventory to local and regional food banks.
The legislation was included in the America Gives More Act.
“This is a victory for those in need,” Reed said. “My bill provides incentives for businesses to partner with food banks and charities to provide otherwise wasted food to those that need it most. I am proud to have played a role in a bill that touches and helps people with real immediate needs. I care deeply about our community here in the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes, and this bill will bring much needed relief.”
The bill, which was originally introduced by Reed last May, extends food donation tax provisions to restaurants, grocery stores, farmers and other businesses who donate any part of their inventory to food banks.
“The America Gives More Act of 2015 is an important step in strengthening the response to the issue of hunger in America, and we appreciate Congressman Reed’s leadership in championing this bill from the beginning,” Natasha Thompson, president and CEO of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, said. “Addressing the staggering need that exists in our communities requires a collaborative effort, and we value our partnership with Congressman Reed in this shared mission.”
The America Gives More Act passed by a substantial vote of 279-137.
“That is why I took to the House floor to advocate for those that face the specter of hunger and to appeal to the heart of my colleagues and the president,” Reed said. “Despite our political differences, this bill will truly help those that need it most. With its passage, it is my hope that we will set aside party politics and embrace the golden rule – love your neighbors – that is at the heart of what it means to be American.”
