The Senate unanimously passed a resolution introduced by U.S. Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) on Friday that would recognize November as National Native American Heritage Month.
The bipartisan resolution, which was co-sponsored by Daines and U.S. Sen. John Tester (D-MT), celebrates Native Americans’ heritage, culture and history, and recognizes their contributions to the nation.
“National Native American Heritage Month celebrates the rich history, culture and legacy of Indian tribes to our country,” Daines said. “By honoring the importance of tribal self-governance, preserving indigenous languages, we can continue to strengthen and preserve the United States’ commitment of government-to-government relationships.”
Daines and Tester also introduced legislation recognizing November as National Native American Heritage Month in 2015.
In addition to recognizing November as National Native American Heritage Month, the resolution also recognizes the Friday after Thanksgiving as Native American Heritage Day. The resolution “urges the people of the United States to observe National Native American Heritage Month and Native American Heritage Day with appropriate programs and activities.”
