U.S. Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) on Jan. 9 led more than a dozen of her Republican colleagues in introducing legislation that would designate the first week of every November as Anti-Communism Week.
The Anti-Communism Week Act, H.R. 6540, which would build upon Trump’s Anti-Communism Week proclamation issued on Nov. 7, 2025, also would request an annual presidential proclamation recognizing the victims of communist regimes worldwide.
“Communism has left a trail of death, suffering, and shattered nations across the globe, from Cuba to China, from Venezuela to North Korea,” Rep. Salazar said. “Too many Americans, especially in our schools, are now dangerously unaware of the real history and real horrors behind these failed systems.”
If enacted, the congresswoman said that H.R. 6540 would formally designate a week to reaffirm America’s commitment to freedom, educate youth about “the deadly consequences of communist ideology,” and honor the memory of the tens of millions who have died under it.
“If we lose sight of history, we risk repeating it,” she said. “This week isn’t just symbolic, it’s a necessary stand for liberty and truth.”
Rep. Salazar sponsored H.R. 6540 alongside 13 GOP original cosponsors, including U.S. Reps. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) and Don Bacon (R-NE). It is the companion bill to the identical S. 3244, which U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) cosponsored on Nov. 20, 2025.
“Communism has claimed over 100 million lives by suppressing freedom, erasing faith, and destroying the prosperity that comes from hard work,” Sen. Blackburn said. “The Anti-Communism Week Act would designate Nov. 2 through 8 as a time to honor those victims, stand firm for liberty, and ensure this destructive ideology ends up on the ash heap of history.”
