A bipartisan resolution sponsored on May 19 by U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan (R-PA) aims to raise awareness about electrical hazards in homes, schools, and workplaces, as well as the actions that Americans could take to protect against electrically related hazards.
“Electrical safety isn’t just a technical concern, it’s a public safety priority,” Rep. Bresnahan said. “By investing in education, preparedness, and a skilled workforce, we can help prevent accidents and save lives.”
Each year, fires caused by electrical failure or malfunction result in more than 1,000 injuries, $1.4 billion in property damage, and nearly 400 deaths, while roughly 2,000 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for electrical shock or burns caused by tampering with a wall outlet, according to the text of House Resolution (H.Res.) 1302.
Cosponsored by U.S. Rep. Janelle Bynum (D-OR), H.Res. 1302 would designate May 2026 as National Electrical Safety Month and encourage all citizens to observe the importance of establishing and practicing electrical safety habits to reduce the number of electrically related fires, injuries, and deaths.
“This National Electrical Safety Month, we’re promoting safe practices, supporting workforce training, and raising awareness about the everyday risks that can lead to fires, electrocutions, and serious injuries, from overloaded outlets and faulty wiring to unsafe jobsite conditions and downed power lines,” said Rep. Bresnahan. “I want to thank Rep. Bynum for joining me in making this a priority in Congress.”
The resolution is endorsed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, the National Association of Electrical Distributors, the Electrical Safety Foundation International, and the National Electrical Contractors Association.
“Poor electrical safety can be more than a shock. It can be fatal,” said Rep. Bynum. “Increasing awareness around electrical safety saves lives and keeps our communities safer.”
H.Res. 1302 has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee.
