Nuclear Prosperity and Security Act sponsored by Latta

U.S. Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH) is leading seven Republican colleagues in proposing legislation to ensure the availability of uranium in America and to support the nation’s strategic fuel cycle capabilities.

“The United States has fallen behind in the competitive development of nuclear energy, and now, we rely heavily on foreign sources of uranium,” Rep. Latta said. “In order to avoid threats to our nuclear supply chain, we need to build up our domestic uranium mining, production and conversion by establishing a uranium reserve.”

The congressman on Feb. 25 sponsored the Nuclear Prosperity and Security Act, H.R. 1351, which is cosponsored by members including U.S. Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-IN). The measure would direct the U.S. Secretary of Energy to establish and operate a uranium reserve in the United States.

“The Nuclear Prosperity and Security Act would establish a domestic uranium reserve that will result in lower carbon emissions, new jobs and economic growth, and a more secure world,” said Rep. Latta, noting that the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on a natural resource bill that would further restrict uranium mining in the United States.

“This would be another disappointing setback for our domestic energy production and security,” he said. “Instead, we need to be boosting our domestic energy supply in order to make the United States more energy secure and independent.”

According to Rep. Latta’s office, the lawmaker led similar legislation in the 116th Congress. The newly introduced H.R. 1351 has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee.
