McCaul issues call to action against China’s competitive threats

U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) on Feb. 4 unveiled a new initiative to counter China’s competitive threats and team up with American allies to better compete with the country on an international scale.

“My goal is to elevate the national discourse regarding the Chinese Communist Party’s true intentions and call America to action. As a nation, we must rise to this challenge,” said Rep. McCaul, ranking member of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee. “Bringing awareness is the first step toward formulating an enduring, comprehensive strategy for the U.S. and our allies to best compete against China on the world stage.”

Rep. McCaul discussed the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) global malign influence campaign at an event held Tuesday by the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C., announcing a plan that he says would counter China’s corrupt, deceptive influence around the world.

The congressman said that the initiative’s goals are to educate the American public and others about the threat posed by China’s ongoing campaign to challenge American interests in key domains, such as security, academia, commerce, technology, and governance, and to foster a comprehensive strategy with U.S. allies and partners to better compete with China globally.

“Under the totalitarian leadership of the CCP, China has become the United States’ strategic adversary and most consequential foreign policy challenge of the century,” he said. Complacency toward Chairman Xi and his Chinese Communist Party has allowed their quest for dominance to go largely unchecked on the world stage for far too long.”

Under Rep. McCaul’s plan, for instance, he would address China’s threats by leading a campaign of allies against authoritarianism, according to an outline of his initiative. This would include building coalitions to counter communist China’s plan for global dominance; challenging communist ideology by promoting Western values, including religious freedom, democracy, transparency, and equality; and exposing the CCP’s corrupt and coercive actions, according to the outline.
