The U.S. House Science, Space, and Technology Committee on Nov. 29 passed two bills led by U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK) that would bolster the nation’s leadership in quantum sciences and strengthen America’s commercial space sector.
“I’m pleased to advance these two critical pieces of legislation to secure America’s global competitiveness in the science and space fields,” said Rep. Lucas, who chairs the committee. “Both bills were developed with significant stakeholder input and have drawn strong support, ensuring the success of these industries moving forward.”
The committee voted 36-0 to approve the bipartisan National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act, H.R. 6213, which Rep. Lucas introduced on Nov. 3 alongside 11 original cosponsors, including U.S. Reps. Jay Obernolte (R-CA) and Zoe Lofgren (D-CA).
If enacted, H.R. 6213 would reauthorize the National Quantum Initiative Act.
“H.R. 6213 will harness the accomplishments of the committee’s 2018 National Quantum Initiative Act to conduct breakthrough research, drive new quantum applications, bolster industry partnerships, and invigorate the quantum ecosystem,” Rep. Lucas said. “As China and Russia are actively making notable investments in quantum systems, we must maintain our momentum to secure our leadership position in this revolutionary field, and this bill does just that.”
The House Science, Space, and Technology Committee also voted 21-17 to approve the Republican-led Commercial Space Act of 2023, H.R. 6131, which Rep. Lucas cosponsored with bill sponsor U.S. Rep. Brian Babin (R-TX) to update government oversight of commercial space activities, the congressional record bill summary says.
“H.R. 6131 is critical to supporting America’s commercial space economy, as it streamlines the regulatory environment, ensures compliance with international treaty obligations, reduces administrative burdens, and promotes best practices in orbit,” said Rep. Lucas. “Promoting a transparent, responsible environment here at home will strengthen our domestic industry and encourage an arena rife with innovation.”
Both bills now head to the full U.S. House for consideration.
