U.S. Rep. John Katko (R-NY) recently expressed strong support for federal efforts to strengthen America’s supply chain for medical supplies and devices as part of the nationwide response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Rep. Katko and his New York colleague U.S. Rep. Anthony Brindisi (D-NY) sent a March 20 letter to President Donald Trump emphasizing the importance of coordination with manufacturers, as well as state and local governments, to maintain production of such products during the coming weeks.
The lawmakers also called on the administration to use the authority invoked under the Defense Production Act of 1950 to immediately expand and mobilize necessary medical supplies for hospitals in central and upstate New York.
“The federal government must continue to signal strong support for our doctors, nurses and medical professionals as the impact of COVID-19 on our nation’s hospitals continues to escalate,” wrote Rep. Katko and his colleague.
The lawmakers also asked that Trump coordinate closely with medical device and supply manufacturers to ensure their ability to meet increasing demands.
“As necessary workforce and travel restrictions are deployed to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, it is critical that federal, state and local officials recognize the essential role that these businesses play in supporting our healthcare providers,” according to their letter. “An effective national response to this pandemic is incumbent on the strength of our medical supply chain.”
