House committee advances Fitzpatrick’s bill prohibiting foreign donations in U.S. elections

The U.S. House Committee on Administration on Nov. 30 approved a bipartisan bill unveiled by U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) that aims to keep foreign nationals out of America’s elections.

“Foreign adversaries have no business influencing American elections on the local, state, or federal level,” Rep. Fitzpatrick said. “Our bipartisan legislation will ensure that foreign agents and entities are prohibited from contributing to campaigns for ballot initiatives or referenda in the United States.”

The Stop Foreign Funds in Elections Act, H.R. 3229, which Rep. Fitzpatrick sponsored on May 11 with lead original cosponsor U.S. Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), would prohibit contributions and donations by foreign nationals in American elections.

“Foreign money has no place in America’s elections,” said Rep. Golden. “With passage through the House Administration Committee …, we’re one important step closer to keeping our elections in the hands of Americans and getting this common-sense, bipartisan legislation signed into law.”

H.R. 3229 now heads to the full chamber for consideration.

“As this bill further advances to the House floor, I encourage my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support this commonsense election security measure,” Rep. Fitzpatrick said.
