Fischer’s home-state national security provisions pass in Senate-approved FY24 NDAA

U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) successfully secured a series of national security provisions in the Senate’s fiscal year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which it voted 86-11 to approve on July 27.

“I’m pleased that my provisions to modernize our nuclear triad, expand munitions production, and stand up to China’s propaganda efforts were all included in this bipartisan bill,” Sen. Fischer said. “We will continue to work to get the NDAA across the finish line and to the president’s desk in the coming months.”

The Senate-approved NDAA, S. 2226, would authorize FY 2024 appropriations and set policies for U.S. Department of Defense programs and activities, military construction, and the national security programs of the U.S. Department of Energy, according to the congressional record.

“This year’s Senate NDAA is a strong package that will ensure the United States is prepared to tackle the challenges China, Russia, and other adversaries pose to our nation,” said Sen. Fischer.

Collectively, the lawmaker’s national security provisions included in the Senate-approved S. 2226 would strengthen the U.S. nuclear deterrent, expand domestic munitions production capacity, and continue to block China’s propaganda efforts in Hollywood, according to a summary provided by Sen. Fischer’s staff.

“I also successfully led several provisions to support Nebraska institutions like STRATCOM and Offutt Air Force Base [AFB], which play a vital role in keeping this country safe,” she said in June.

Specifically, Sen. Fischer wrote and secured many provisions in S. 2226 to support Nebraska military equities, including facilities, missions, and platforms. She also fought to enhance defense-related partnerships and programs that are important to the state.

For instance, such provisions include authorizing military construction projects across her home state, such as completing the National Guard Readiness Center in Bellevue, Neb.; planning and design of Collective Training Unaccompanied Housing at two Open Bay training sites; and planning and design of the Logistics Readiness Squadron Transportation Facility at Offutt AFB, among several others.

Additionally, S. 2226 includes a Fischer provision to fully fund the 55th Wing by authorizing upgrades to its RC-135’s systems. The 55th Wing is primarily based at Offutt AFB, the summary says.

Numerous other provisions of hers include those for the new LGM–35A Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile weapon system; authorizing $10 million for STRATCOM’s NC3 network sensor demonstrator; authorizing $9 million for the the Air Force Weather Agency, or 557th Weather Wing, headquarter at Offutt AFB to accelerate data migration efforts; and requiring the establishment of an Electromagnetic Spectrum Enterprise Operational Lead for Joint Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations at STRATCOM, according to the summary.
