Ernst’s stored-grain protections provision becomes law as part of supplemental disaster bill

U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) on June 6 commended President Donald Trump for signing a bipartisan disaster aid package that included language from a bill she cosponsored to assist farmers who lost their stored grain during a declared natural disaster.

“Iowans have waited far too long for Congress to get its act together to deliver desperately needed aid to our communities,” Sen. Ernst said. “I’m grateful the president was finally able to sign this bipartisan relief package into law, to help our families, farmers and small businesses in Iowa get back on their feet.”

Sen. Ernst joined members from both chambers on April 10 to introduce the Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2019, S. 1133/H.R. 2284, to provide disaster tax relief for certain disasters occurring in 2019, according to the text of the measure.

The stored-grain provision is part of that bicameral, bipartisan bill, much of which was added to the Additional Supplemental Appropriations for Disaster Relief Act of 2019, H.R. 2157, that became law with the president’s signature on June 6. H.R. 2157 was sponsored by U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY).

“I’m especially pleased this new law includes my provision that will provide assistance to our farmers who are facing losses from the destruction of their stored grain,” said Sen. Ernst. “In the days, weeks and months to come, I’ll continue working to provide help and assistance to those in need.”
