Davis, Kinzinger express disappointment in planned closure of nuclear power plants in Illinois

U.S. Reps. Rodney Davis (R-IL) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) expressed disappointment with the recent announcement that two nuclear plants in Illinois will be shuttered.

Exelon Corp. announced that it would begin shutdown procedures for its Clinton Power Station and Quad Cities Generating Station due to a lack of progress with Illinois energy legislation.

“I am extremely disappointed to hear of Exelon’s announcement and continue to urge state legislative leaders to find a legislative solution that will allow Illinois’ nuclear plants, including Clinton Power Station, to continue to provide low-cost, reliable energy to millions of families and prevent more than 4,000 people from losing their jobs,” Davis said. “It’s time to put politics aside, and find a solution that recognizes the benefits of nuclear energy and the economic opportunities it provides our state.”

Kinzinger said that he was “deeply saddened” by Exelon’s announcement and that Illinois would “suffer greatly” from the closing of the two plans.

“In a time where the Illinois economy is stagnant, the state legislature should be leading the effort to modernize our energy policies to provide an environment in which these sources of clean, baseload energy are able to survive,” Kinzinger said. “I urge those in the state legislature to quickly find a solution to ensure the rest of our nuclear fleet does not meet the same fate as that of the Quad Cities and Clinton plants.”
