Collins calls for temporary ban on exports of medical supplies

Rep. Doug Collins

U.S. Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) this week urged the Trump administration to impose a temporary ban on all exports of coronavirus testing and diagnostic equipment, personal protective equipment, respirators, pharmaceutical supplies, and any other medical supplies needed by American hospitals until domestic demand has been met to fight COVID-19.

“In recent days, I have become aware of the struggle of some hospitals to obtain ordered medical supplies due to distributor policies that prioritize orders from other countries,” wrote Rep. Collins in a March 24 letter sent to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “While I understand that distributors wish to fulfill their international orders, it is vital that we ensure American healthcare workers have the supplies and equipment they need to reduce the spread of coronavirus and overcome this pandemic.”

Germany, France, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and India recently imposed similar bans on the export of supplies such as masks, respirators and pharmaceutical products, according to the congressman’s letter.

Rep. Collins also noted that the private sector has been an incredible partner in the nation’s effort to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

“Its contribution during these times cannot be overstated,” he wrote. “I do feel it necessary, however, that we provide clear guidance that all production of necessary medical supplies must first be sent to purchasers in the United States until domestic demand has been satisfied. This action could help reduce the spread of coronavirus and save numerous American lives.”
