Bipartisan resolution offered by Tillis recognizes third anniversary of Ukraine’s invasion

A bipartisan resolution cosponsored on Feb. 24 by U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) would acknowledge the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and express the U.S. Senate’s support for the Ukrainian people.

“As we mark the third anniversary of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, it is critical that we maintain our support for the Ukrainian people and hold Putin accountable as the United States seeks to secure a lasting peace,” Sen. Tillis said Monday. “This resolution reinforces our bipartisan commitment to supporting Ukraine as a free and sovereign nation.”

Senate Resolution 91 is sponsored by U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), who along with Sen. Tillis co-chairs the Senate NATO Observer Group.

“This resolution reaffirms our commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty, supports Ukraine’s Euro Atlantic integration, and emphasizes the need for Ukraine to be at the negotiating table when determining its own future,” said Sen. Shaheen.

If enacted, the resolution also would condemn Russia’s illegal aggression and attempts to seize Ukrainian territory. It also would commend NATO, the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, and the international community for their continued efforts to support Ukraine’s defense and the protection of human rights, among other provisions, according to the text of the resolution.

Among the 16 other lawmakers who joined Sen. Tillis as an original cosponsor of the resolution are U.S. Sens. Roger Wicker (R-MS), John Curtis (R-UT), Steve Daines (R-MT), and Susan Collins (R-ME).

The resolution is under consideration by the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
