Bacon seeks tax code exemptions for Gold Star family benefits

U.S. Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) introduced a bipartisan bill that would retroactively exclude survivor benefits for Gold Star families from recent changes to the United States tax code.

“As a strong supporter of our Gold Star families, I know how important these benefits are and how harmful the unintended consequences of recent changes in the tax code were,” Rep. Bacon said on May 2.

Rep. Bacon on Thursday introduced H.R. 2481 with lead bill sponsor U.S. Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA) and 23 other cosponsors, including U.S. Reps. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) and Paul Cook (R-CA).

“This bipartisan teamwork is what America expects from Congress and I am proud of my colleagues for coming together to take care of our military families who paid the ultimate price for our freedom,” said Rep. Bacon, who is co-chair and a founding member of the new For Country Caucus, a congressional member group of Armed Services veterans.

If enacted, H.R. 2481 would exclude benefits paid to the children of deceased U.S. military service members and veterans from being taxed at the same rate as income received from trust funds and investments, according to information provided by the congressman’s office.

The measure has been referred to the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee for consideration.
