House E&C members praise nomination of Price as HHS secretary

Tom Price

House Energy and Commerce Committee leaders praised President-elect Donald Trump’s selection of U.S. Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) to serve as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

U.S. Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-IN) said Price cares deeply about patients and access to quality health care.

“As a physician with firsthand experience caring for patients, a leader on conservative health care policy, and Budget Committee chairman, Dr. Price has both the practical and policy experience to lead the way at HHS,” Bucshon said. “He’s also in a unique position to work with our Republican Congress to fix our nation’s health care system.”

U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, said he has witnessed Price’s approach to health care solutions through their work together on the House Doctors Caucus.

“As we look towards the great task of repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, there is no better person to help usher this through the Department of Health and Human Services,” Burgess said.

Price, who serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, is a strong opponent of Obamacare. He wants to see the health care law abolished and replaced with a system that puts patients, families, and doctors back in charge of medical decisions.

U.S. Rep. Billy Long (R-MO) said he was proud to see one of his closest friends in Congress nominated as health and human services secretary.

“With Tom’s background in the medical field and his time as a surgeon, I know he will be a great asset to the administration,” Long said. “I look forward to working with him in the coming years.”
