Miller: Plan to increase Syrian refugees in the U.S. concerning

U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI) voiced concern on Saturday about the Obama administration’s intent to increase the number of Syrian refugees allowed to settle in the United States.

“Yesterday’s horrific terrorist attacks waged against the innocent in Paris serve as a grim reminder that we must remain ever vigilant in the fight against terrorism, not only around the world, but here on U.S. soil,” Miller said. “As details of yesterday’s gruesome events continue to emerge, it is increasingly likely and extremely worrisome that some of these attackers may have entered France by disguising themselves as Syrian refugees.

“While the U.S. has a long history of assisting refugees from across the globe, we must not lose sight of the significant threat posed by ISIS fighters who seek to exploit our generosity and do this nation irreparable harm. Not withstanding this threat, this administration has made clear its intention to significantly increase the number of Syrian refugees resettled in the United States, and I am concerned our security screening procedures will have neither the intelligence nor the capacity to properly vet incoming refugees. Should this administration continue their efforts, even in the wake of yesterday’s attacks, it is critical they assure the American people they can sustain the necessary security protocols.

Miller, the vice chair of the House Homeland Security Committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, also questioned the anticipated closing of the Guantanamo Bay detention center and subsequent transfer of detainees to U.S. facilities, warning that such actions would jeopardize national security.

“As this country struggles to defend itself against the ever-evolving threats posed by terrorist organizations, like ISIS and al-Qaeda, it is imperative that we do everything we can to safeguard our homeland,” Miller said. “Therefore, I strongly urge this administration to reconsider its policies pertaining to Syrian refugees and Gitmo.”
