Senate to hold field hearing on pipeline safety

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee will hold a field hearing to discuss pipeline safety, and the pending reauthorization of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) on Friday, U.S. Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) recently announced.

The Pipeline Safety: State and Local Perspectives hearing will be held at 10 a.m. at Montana State University in Billings.

“Montanans know the importance of safely transporting our natural resources, whether through pipelines, highways or rail lines,” Daines said. “This field hearing will allow PHMSA and others in Washington to hear directly from Montanans, local officials and industry leaders about ongoing work to improve safety and create jobs.”

As the committee considers new pipeline safety legislation, the hearing will examine current issues and challenges relating to inspection and safe management of the nation’s pipeline network.

In addition to Daines, U.S. Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Deb Fischer (R-NE), chairwoman of the Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security Subcommittee, will be in attendance.

Witnesses scheduled to testify at the hearinginclude:
Marie Therese Dominguez, PHMSA administrator;  Todd Denton, president of Phillips 66 Pipeline; John Ostlund, Yellowstone County commissioner; and Michelle Slyder of the Montana Liquid Gas Pipeline Association.
