U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI) attended an open-house event at the Ira Township Library on Monday in Ira, Michigan, to celebrate the dedication of a new wing honoring the library’s late founder, Phoebe Becker, as well as its 50th anniversary.
Miller also gave the library several new books that were donated through the U.S. Library of Congress’ surplus-book program.
“Today, I had the opportunity to join local officials, the Ira Township Library’s hard-working staff and volunteers, and members of the community,” Miller said during the dedication.
Becker became a local legend after establishing the Ira Township Library in 1965. As its librarian, she worked to spread the joy of literature to adults and children alike. Becker created the “Little Kids Story Time” at the library, a reading program that many children looked forward to attending. The unveiling of the new wing is part of the 50th anniversary celebration, which continues to offer the joy of reading and learning to the 5,500 residents it serves in Ira.
“Phoebe’s love and compassion for reading and this community is still evident today in the library’s continued success – 50 years after it first opened its doors,” Miller said. “This great community, including Phoebe Becker’s son, Bernie, who still resides in the area, is fortunate to have this amazing library.”
Miller has represented Michigan’s 10th District in the House since 2003. Born in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan, in 1954,Miller previously served as Michigan’s 40th Secretary of State from 1995 to 2003. Miller was educated at Macomb Community College & Northwood Institute. Miller serves on the following committees: Homeland Security, Transportation and Infrastructure, and House Administration.
