Scalise pleased with passage of Trade Promotion Authority

Following Senate passage of the much-debated Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation on Wednesday, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) reiterated the need for implementation of the new law.

“Today’s bipartisan Senate action to pass critical American trade legislation sent a strong message to our allies around the world — America is the global economic leader, and that we — not China — are setting the rules of the road on trade,” Scalise said. “TPA will give U.S. workers a competitive edge, so that we can create jobs and grow a healthy economy here at home.”

The legislation gives Congress the final approval of all trade deals negotiated by any president’s administration.

In addition to providing oversight on all trade deals, legislators believe that TPA legislation will lead to more jobs in the manufacturing and logistics industries, and bolster America’s economic status at home as well as in the global marketplace.

The bill now heads to President Obama’s desk to be signed into law.

“I urge President Obama to quickly sign this critical legislation into law in order to help create good-paying jobs, grow our economy, and strengthen our national security,” Scalise concluded.
