Alexander highlights Republican ideas to reform education funding, healthcare

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) recently highlighted Republican efforts to create jobs and reform healthcare and federal education funding during a weekly Republican address.

Alexander, the ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, highlighted Republican policies that are designed to empower people and entrepreneurs.

“The best way for government to operate is to figure out what kinds of things are enablers of society and then make investments in those things…,” Alexander said.

Alexander said the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act introduced by House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) in 2012 made it easier for entrepreneurs to launch businesses, raise capital and take companies public.

“Republicans say the success of the JOBS Act proves that lifting the big wet blanket of Obama regulations will enable our free enterprise system to create plenty of jobs,” Alexander said.

Alexander recently introduced a plan that is designed to empower lower-income parents to choose the best school for their children to attend. Under the proposal, states would be allowed to turn half of federal education dollars into $2,100 scholarships that enable parents to choose the best schools for their children, Alexander said.

Alexander also contrasted Democratic and Republican ideas to reform healthcare.

“Republicans believe that freedom and more choices will empower you to find a policy that fits your needs and your budget,” Alexander said. “Republicans would let you buy insurance across state lines, allow small businesses to join together and insure more people, expand access to health savings accounts, give governors flexibility with their state Medicaid programs and allow patients to compare the price and quality of doctors and medical services.”
